Basil is a perennial plant and part of the mint family. The plant can grow to be 1 to 4 feet (30-130 cm) high. Basil leaves branch from a single stem that also produces clusters of white flowers at its tip. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, which grow between 1 to 4 inches long (3-11 cm). It takes about 6.5 pounds of basil leaves to produce a 15 ml bottle of essential oil.
