Douglas Fir is a conifer that grows natively throughout North America. This tall, evergreen fir tree has a sweet and refreshing aroma with a light, lemony note! It is commonly used to purify the skin and promote a positive mood. Douglas Fir is sustainably sourced from young trees in New Zealand, where its overpopulation threatens the country’s ecosystem. By harvesting the young Douglas Fir trees and using them for essential oil, dōTERRA helps to combat the environmental impact of the trees overtaking the land.
Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. Consult your doctor if pregnant or in treatment. Avoid eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

Although Douglas Fir is native to North America, it grows voraciously in New Zealand’s ecosystem and is overtaking the land. By harvesting and distilling young Douglas Fir trees from New Zealand, we are helping combat environmental harm from overpopulation of Douglas Fir trees while providing a sustainable, premium conifer essential oil.
Douglas Fir is an invasive species in New Zealand. First introduced into New Zealand for the timber industry, Douglas Fir grows almost 20 times faster in New Zealand than in the US. Consequently, they have overtaken the land to the point that native plants are prevented from growing.
We are harvesting young Douglas Fir trees to help battle the negative environmental impact on New Zealand’s native plants and trees. By harvesting the trees when they are young—5 to 7 years old—it prevents the trees from getting to an age where they produce cones, which would exacerbate the problem further. Additionally, we work closely with the New Zealand government to collect and utilise the biomass (needles), which would otherwise be left on the side of the mountains or burnt following a commercial forest harvest for timber.
Douglas Fir grows at an agressive rate in New Zealand. doTERRA chose to source Douglas Fir essential oil in an effort to protect and preserve New Zealand’s native ecosystem. Here’s how it has helped:
You will find your Quality ID on the bottom of doTERRA single essential oil bottles purchased after May 2016. The Quality ID will contain a series of six or seven numbers and one letter.
