Vetiver Oil
Vetiveria zizanioides
Originating from India and Bengal, vetiver is mainly cultivated for its spice. It is called ‘Khuskhus’ and oil is extracted from its underground stems and roots. The root of vetiver, a grassy plant, has properties to help stabilize and prevent soil erosion, and is widely used as a perfume because of its exotic scent. The gentle scent of vetiver helps to soothe the mood and relax the body, making it an ideal oil for various uses of aromatherapy. Why Haiti?
A hearty grass that can survive both flooding and drought, Vetiver grows well in Haiti’s weather conditions. Vetiver grass also helps to prevent erosion and provides additional nutrients to soil. Haiti exports about half of the world’s Vetiver essential oil.
How Does it Work?
Vetiver is a member of the grass family. Its root system can grow 2 to 4 m down, making it ideal for preventing erosion. The roots grow vertically rather than horizontally unlike most other grass roots.
The essential oil is distilled from these roots. The longer that vetiver roots have been in the ground, the higher the quality of essential oil. This is why our farmers are paid a premium to leave the roots in the ground longer. Ideally, vetiver should be harvested about 12 to 18 months after planting.

- These co-operatives provide farmers with rights and bargaining power that ensure fair prices, consistent income, access to prepayments, and long-term contracts
- Co-operatives receive regular training on best growing and harvesting practices
- We’ve also provided storage warehouses for the co-operatives where vetiver roots can be collected before distillation or stored to dry during the rainy season
