A flowering plant in the Valerian family, Nard is native to the high alpine and subalpine regions of the Himalayan mountains. Valued for centuries and traditionally used to anoint people of high recognition, Nard is also employed in Ayurvedic practices in India. Historically, the essential oil ofTERRA Spikenard is distilled from the roots of the plant. In addition to elevating mood and promoting relaxation, Nard also helps promote clean, healthy skin. Today, its woody, spicy aroma is commonly used in perfumes and relaxing massage oils. By sourcing Nardo oil from Nepal, doTERRA can support distiller and harvester partners in their much needed revenue streams, especially in the remote areas where it is harvested, as well as developing projects in rural communities through the Co-Impact Supply initiative.

Spikenard grows in the sub-alpine and alpine region of the Himalaya of Nepal, China, and India. We source our spikenard from Nepal, where we support much needed income streams for harvesters and distillers.
Spikenard is a flowering plant from the same family as valerian. It grows high in the Himalaya at elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 m. The plant grows to about 1 metre high and has small, pink, bell-shaped flowers.
Spikenard is an endangered plant so there are regulations on the amount and frequency of harvesting. All our spikenard is sourced in compliance with these regulations. We understand the importance of its protection and want to help ensure that this plant can be available for generations to come.
The dark green essential oil comes from the spikenard rhizomes, which are plant stems that grow underground. Roots usually grow from the rhizome. The harvest season is very short, usually only 15 to 20 days. After harvest, the spikenard rhizome is cleaned and then dried for several days before being distilled.
doTERRA seeks to build supplier capacity by supporting farmers, producers, and distillers through training and financial support. Together with our partners in Nepal, we have been active in facilitating supply chain improvement and sustainability programmes for Spikenard. We worked with our partners to develop manuals on best practices and then implemented training on these topics. Additionally, with our partners, we've created nurseries and demonstration plots to test spikenard cultivation (always in compliance with the Nepalese government and CITES regulations). These initiatives help to protect and make best use of this beautiful natural resource.
