Familiar and nostalgic. Evocative and romantic. Valued since the time of the ancient Aztecs and often used in perfumes, vanilla is one of the world's most popular scents, and one of the most expensive to produce. The Vanilla planifolia plant belongs to the orchid family, and is a perennial climber that grows to over 20 meters, with white and yellow flowers that produce odorless pods or grains. The flowers must be pollinated by hand, and it takes three to four years for the vanilla plant to begin producing the beans, which must be harvested by hand. They then undergo a lengthy and laborious process to allow them to fully develop their aroma and flavor. Subsequently, the grains are ground into small pieces and then placed in a pressurized tube where the components are extracted by injecting pressurized CO2. This CO2 extract is then washed with a natural alcohol to remove the waxes and some non-volatile components to produce the absolute. We couple this absolute with Fractionated Coconut Oil and the result is doTERRA Madagascar Vanilla.
