Celery Seed

Apium graveolens

Celery was used as early as the 5th century by the Chinese, and is widely used in Indian Ayurvedic practices today. The conventionally grown celery found in supermarkets looks nothing like the celery found in local farmers' markets. The celery plant grows up to 90 cm, is bright green, and radiates life. Celery has a complex, strong, sweet and spicy aroma. The plant takes two years to fully mature and produces tiny, bronze or brown fruits. The seeds are the main repository of the essential oil. Limonene, which is the dominant constituent, puts Celery Seed oil in the same category as citrus peel and pine needle oils. The oil produces a soothing, relaxing and positive environment.

Primary Benefits

  • May help calm the body and mind.

Cooking with Celery Seed

Essential oils are very potent compared to dry seasonings, spices, or other flavouring agents, so even the tiniest amount can add a serious blast of flavour to your dish. When using Celery Seed essential oil in cooking, it is best to use the toothpick method – dip the tip of a clean toothpick into the essential oil bottle and stir the toothpick into your ingredients. After you’ve stirred the toothpick around in the dish, do a taste test to see whether you want to add more of the oil or not.

Sourcing

How does it work?

Celery has a very long growing season (at least 15 months) and has a low tolerance for heat, cold and drought. Since it is a biennial plant, meaning it won't flower until the second year, it is planted early in spring and harvested in early summer of the following year.

Before harvesting, the plants are allowed to flower and go to seed. The seeds dry and turn a greyish-tan colour when they are ready to harvest. The dried seeds can fall off the plant with the slightest breeze, so they require vigilant monitoring to ensure they are harvested at just the right moment.

After harvesting, the seeds are crushed and steam distilled to produce doTERRA Celery essential oil.
