Thyme

Thymus vulgaris

Thought to impart courage to its bearer, Thyme was given to knights and warriors before they went into battle by ladies of the Middle Ages. During this same period, Thyme was often placed beneath pillows to help promote a peaceful sleep and to ward off nightmares. The ancient Greeks used Thyme in their baths and burned it as an incense in their temples while the Egyptians used it in their traditional ceremonies. Today, Thyme is commonly used as a seasoning.

Primary Benefits

  • Adds flavour to food.
  • Diffuse to add a refreshing aroma to your home.

Cooking with Thyme

Essential oils are very potent compared to dry seasonings, spices, or other flavouring agents, so even the tiniest amount can add a serious blast of flavour to your dish. When using Thyme essential oil in cooking, it is best to use the toothpick method – dip the tip of a clean toothpick into the essential oil bottle and stir the toothpick into your ingredients. After you’ve stirred the toothpick around in the dish, do a taste test to see if additional oil should be added.

Sourcing

Why Africa and Europe?

Thyme grows best in a hot, sunny location with well-drained soil. We source our thyme from areas in both Europe and Africa that provide these optimal growing conditions for the plant.

How Does it Work?

   Africa & Europe
Thyme is a perennial herb in the mint family. It has woody stems covered with tiny hairs. The leaves are small, ovular, and slightly rolled at the edges. Thyme also grows tiny flowers that are bluish-purple to pink. It is usually planted in the spring and grows through early autumn. It tolerates drought well and is harvested all throughout the summer. The primary source of essential oil is in the leaves, which are steam distilled.
