The magnolia flower is said to be a well-travelled flower with species scattered throughout South Asia, the Pacific, and North America. Also called white champaca or white jade orchid tree, magnolia flowers have been used in China for many years to help create a sense of balance. Like Lavender and Bergamot, Magnolia is primarily Linalool which may help create feelings of relaxation. The magnolia tree has species scattered throughout South Asia, the Pacific, and North America, however, we source our essential oil from magnolia trees in southern China due to their especially fragrant, beautiful aroma.
Magnolia trees were once quite large. Traditionally, farmers harvesting the flowers had to erect scaffolding around the trees to access and pick the Magnolia flowers. At some point, someone cultivated the trees and dwarfed them, making the flowers easier to pick. Trees start growing in giant wooden or cement containers.
The essential oil comes from the magnolia flower. Flowers are picked off the tree by hand, then spread out to dry for a few hours before distilling. Magnolia flowers can be harvested twice a year: first in the summer, and again in the late autumn or early winter.
One of doTERRA's core sourcing principles is to reduce poverty by creating and sustaining jobs. By sourcing our Magnolia essential oil in southern China, we are providing and supporting jobs for the local farmers, harvesters, and distillers in rural areas. Here's how this helps:
You will find your Quality ID on the bottom of doTERRA single essential oil bottles purchased after May 2016. The Quality ID will contain a series of six or seven numbers and one letter.
