The south of Brazil is the ideal climate for citrus growing. This area produces high-quality citrus fruit, and consequently, some of the finest quality citrus essential oils.
Mandarin trees are farmed in Brazil to produce mature red mandarin fruit for the fresh market, but Green Mandarin essential oil comes from the immature fruit that has been picked – or thinned – early on in the growing process. Thinning fruit trees is necessary because it creates the space for the remaining fruit to ripen and mature. Thinned fruit is far too green and sour to eat, and is usually forgotten.

Previously, green mandarin was the unripe, waste by-product of the Mandarin tree, thinned and left behind to allow room for mature fruit to grow.
