Cinnamon Bark
Cinnamomum zeylanicum
The sweet, spicy aroma of cinnamon bark is loved around the world. Cinnamon is derived from a tropical, evergreen tree that grows to almost 14 metres high and has highly fragrant bark, leaves, and flowers. Extracted from bark, Cinnamon oil’s stimulating aroma supports that get up and go feeling during the Winter months. Cinnamon has a long history of culinary uses, adding spice to desserts, main meals, and hot drinks, but its essential oil is surprisingly versatile.

Uses
- Try adding 1-2 drops to a hot chocolate or a night time drink.

Why East Africa?
Cinnamon trees grow well in sub-tropical climates, such as the climate in parts of East Africa.
How Does it Work?
Cinnamon – both the spice and the essential oil come from the bark of the cinnamon tree. Most of the production of cinnamon is for the spice industry.
The bark can be harvested year-round after it has reached 3 years of maturity. The tree is cut, and the bark peeled from the trunk and the major branches. The tree can regrow and, when it has reached the right size, be harvested again. After the bark is harvested, it is dried in the sun. The bark is then steam distilled to produce the essential oil.
