Basil can grow wild in both tropical and subtropical regions. There are over 150 varieties of basil grown around the world, but our Basil essential oil is distilled from the sweet basil plant found in Egypt.
Basil is a perennial plant and part of the mint family. The plant can grow to be 1 to 4 feet (30-130 cm) high. Basil leaves branch from a single stem that also produces clusters of white flowers at its tip. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, which grow between 1 to 4 inches long (3-11 cm). It takes about 6.5 pounds of basil leaves to produce a 15 ml bottle of essential oil.
