Melaleuca, or Tea Tree, is native to Australia. It thrives in sunny conditions and moist soil. In Australia, Melaleuca grows all through spring, summer, and autumn.
Parts of Kenya provide similar growing conditions to those of Australia, allowing tea tree to flourish here as well. By also sourcing some of our tea tree from Kenya, we support smallholder farmers in rural areas of the country while still acquiring the best quality essential oil.
The tea tree is evergreen and shrub-like. The essential oil comes from steam distilling the leaves. It has traditionally been used for health purposes by Aboriginal Australians, and at the beginning of WWII, many soldiers in the Australian Army carried a small bottle of tea tree essential oil with them.
Kangaroos run wild in the Australian tea tree plantation that supplies doTERRA. The trees grow from spring through the autumn, with harvesting only done during the winter months to prevent loss of growing time. The same trees can be harvested every year because they begin to re-grow 3 to 6 weeks after harvest. Due to the sustainable harvesting process, the Australia plantation continues to increase the health and productivity of the same fields of tea trees after 18 years of operation.
One of doTERRA’s core Co-Impact Sourcing principles is Environmental Stewardship – promoting energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy, and waste minimisation. Here’s how this is affecting the areas we source Tea Tree (Melaleuca) essential oil:
You will find your Quality ID on the bottom of doTERRA single essential oil bottles purchased after May 2016. The Quality ID will contain a series of six or seven numbers and one letter.
