Pelargonium graveolens
A member of the Pelargonium genus of floral species, geranium is known for its beauty and for being a milestone in the perfume industry. Although there are more than 200 different species of Pelargonium flowers, only a few of them are used as essential oils. As far back as Ancient Egypt, Geranium oil was used by the Egyptians both to beautify the skin. In the Victorian era, fresh Geranium flowers were used as decorative items on formal dining tables. As an essential oil, doTERRA Geranium has been used to promote the appearance of radiant skin, which makes it ideal for skin and hair products.

Why Madagascar and Kenya?
Geranium grows beautifully and bountifully in both Madagascar and Kenya, where small-scale farmers have been growing these fragrant, flowering plants for decades. Geranium requires very little water, but the plant does not flourish in very dry climates. Although the optimal growing environment is challenging to achieve, we’ve found the ideal balance in Kenya and Madagascar. In Kenya, the plant grows well on the slope of Mt. Kenya. In Madagascar, it is grown in the central highlands where the weather is temperate and consistent.
How Does it Work?
The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stock, and flowers of the geranium plant. To achieve the highest quality and oil yield, geranium must be distilled just as – or right before – the plant begins to flower. Once in full bloom, it's too late to get the maximum amount of oil (or, in some cases, any oil). Therefore, the stocks and leaves are harvested right before the plant flowers. When harvested, only part of the plant is cut away; some leaves remain to help the plant regrow. To maintain its benefits, the essential oil must be distilled within hours of harvest.
Promoting Co-operatives
In Madagascar, there has been significant geranium production for more than 75 years. There is currently a network of over 700 smallholder farmers organised into various co-operatives. In Kenya, our Co-Impact sourcing initiatives for Geranium include training smallholder farmers, providing critically important initial inputs, supporting co-operatives, and continued monitoring and evaluation of our initiative through a third-party programme with the University of Oxford. Initiatives in both countries include contracts with fair and transparent pricing, and providing smallholder farmers with a stable and predictable source of income.
